The Year of Perfect Vision

Yes, it’s 2020. It’s a new year and a new decade. It’s a time to make resolutions and stick to them for a week or so…at least that’s how it seems. The optimism in most of us, however, will make us look forward to a better year. It’s time for a change.

So, what do we have to look forward to this year? The Super Bowl? The college football championship? Baseball in the Spring? A long-planned vacation in the Summer? The election in the Fall? The Olympics? Or maybe just some sleep? Ok, the last one is my wish, but I’m sure I’m not alone.

The start of a new year is usually a positive time for most of us. I think part of it is that the mail doesn’t deliver on this day. There won’t be a surprise bill to open on this day so it’s easier to remain positive for an entire day, at least it is for me.

For those of you who over-celebrated the night before, it might not be such a positive day.

HUSBAND: Oh, my head…

WIFE: What time is it?

HUSBAND (reaching for his glasses to see the clock): Um, it’s almost noon…

WIFE: Oh my God! What are the kids doing?

HUSBAND: I don’t smell any smoke, so who cares? Oh, my head…

WIFE: You need to go check on them.

HUSBAND: Me?

WIFE: Yes, you. The way I’m feeling, I’m liable to hurt someone.

HUSBAND: What about me?

WIFE: Yes, I’m liable to hurt you too.

(Pause)

HUSBAND: I’ll go check on the kids.

Now this couple will resolve to never drink that much again, probably numerous times on this day. That’s how the new year works. You resolve to never make the same mistakes again. It’s also why it doesn’t work. These same parents will probably drink too much again.

My wife and I don’t really drink and all our kids are fully grown and gone. For us, the new year is just another year to try to get ahead for retirement. We don’t really make specific resolutions. We spend the entire year reassessing our lives and making changes when needed. We’re pretty good at that. We don’t need to wait for a new year to make changes. We also don’t face defeat with resolutions that fail. I kind of like that.

So, Happy New Year, everybody! No matter what type of new year person you are, enjoy this day because the mail isn’t coming to destroy your mood. Besides, it’s 2020, the year of perfect vision.
